Lesson 9: Telling the time in Malay

Exercises in telling the time.....winter time

Winter time in France starts on the last Sunday of October each year and lasts for 5 months (until the last Saturday of March) when it's changed to summer time (also called Daylight Saving Time).
To avoid any possible misunderstanding in interpreting the time, the 24-hour time is shown here. But in spoken Malay you are expected to use the 12-hour time and say pagi, tengah hari, petang or malam after it depending on whether it is morning, afternoon, evening or night. And, by the way, this is not a running clock. You have to refresh the page to get the latest time!
The day, date and time of the various places given here are in relation to the time of my server in France which at the moment is Wednesday 28 January 2026, 04:38

Telling the time for real (applicable only from last Sunday of October to last Saturday of March)
If the times here are wrong you can go to this page for summer time.

It is now 09:23 (Wednesday) in Nepal (France +4 3/4 hours)
Pukul berapa sekarang di Nepal?
Sekarang pukul 09:23 di Nepal
Check time in Nepal

It is now 11:38 (Wednesday) in Malaysia (France +7 hours)
Pukul berapa sekarang di Malaysia?
Sekarang pukul 11:38 di Malaysia
Check time in Malaysia

It is now 03:38 (Wednesday) in London (France -1 hour)
Pukul berapa sekarang di London?
Sekarang pukul 03:38 di London
Check time in London

It is now 09:08 (Wednesday) in India (France +4.5 hours)
Pukul berapa sekarang di India?
Sekarang pukul 09:08 di India
Check time in India

NOTE: The above times are true only when France changes to winter time on the last Sunday of October each year. So when summer time (daylight saving time) begins on the last Sunday of March each year, all the above times will be wrong by an hour or so. It is possible for me to have the times right throughout the year but this is possible only with php version 5 and above. Unfortunately my server at free.fr has only php version 4 at the moment.
Anyway if that should be the case not to worry. Take the opportunity to practise saying Tidak benar, jam itu tidak betul. Sebenarnya pukul _____ sekarang di ________!
I don't think I have mentioned it before. Sebenarnya... means "Actually...".

..... and the days of the week

A quick revision: hari Ahad (Sunday), Isnin (Monday), Selasa (Tuesday), Rabu (Wednesday), Khamis (Thursday), Jumaat (Friday), Sabtu (Saturday)

Fill in the days of the week below with their Malay names:

It is Tuesday in Hawaii
Hari apa di Hawaii?
Hari _______ di Hawaii

It is Wednesday in France
Hari apa di Perancis?
Hari _______ di Perancis

It is Wednesday in Malaysia
Hari apa di Malaysia?
Hari _______ di Malaysia

It is Tuesday in New York
Hari apa di New York?
Hari _______ di New York

It is Wednesday in London
Hari apa di London?
Hari _______ di London

It is Wednesday in India
Hari apa di India?
Hari _______ di India

Practices in using Kelmarin and Esok

(If semalam is used for "yesterday" in the State where you are, replace kelmarin below with semalam). Incidentally where semalam is used for "yesterday", last night would be malam semalam.

Today is Wednesday = Hari ini hari Rabu di Perancis
Yesterday was Tuesday = Kelmarin hari Selasa
Tomorrow will be Thursday = Esok hari Khamis
